DC++ 0.750 description:

DC++ is a client for the Direct Connect file sharing network. The Direct Connect network is a decentralized network, made up of individual servers (hubs) that users join to share files with other members on that hub. Each hub is individually run by a fellow user of the Direct Connect network, and may have certain themes to the content on the hub. Hub owners set up rules to regulate their hub as they see fit.

DC++ is, based on observable factors, the most prevalent client on the Direct Connect network. Below are some of its features:

  • No ads, spyware, or bundled software that you don't need
  • Open source software, code freely available under the GNU GPL
  • Joins multiple hubs at the same time
  • List of bookmark-like favorite hubs and users
  • Shares large files and many files per your organization scheme
  • Tiger Tree Hashes (TTH) used for file integrity
  • Search across all (or selected) connected hub by type, size, or name
  • Resume of downloads, with optional search for alternate sources
  • Logging options and configuration for chat, private messages, downloads, and uploads
  • Autoconfiguration of UPnP routers
  • MAGNET link support for linking to specific content
  • Automatic and manual download priorities
  • Saving of user's file lists for browsing and queueing
  • Translation into other languags by custom supplied gettext po language files
  • Segmented downloading

I tried to install this new version, but every time i wanted to start it, the program freezed, so I had to shut it down. The interface is the same stupid as in the earlier version and I don't believe there are any other improvements. I used to use this program a few years ago, but of the files I really wanted get there were only one or two sources, and the people who shared them sometimes had really slow connections, so I had to wait a lot to get anything. The admins kick you because you are blonde or you have blue eyes or just because they are depressed a bit, or any other reason without any logic. The users sometimes disconnect you (or themselves from the hub) when your download just started. There are TOO many rules to connect to a hub and there's no logic in the rules either. For one hub you have to share 50 MB of files and you must have three slots to upload and you can connect to five other hubs, on the other you have to share 50 GB, you must have five slots, but you can connect only to two other hubs and so on. Though it doesn't really matter, because mostly the same files are present on each hub: the bigger the hub is the more people share the same files. And most of the shared files are available on any other network that hasn't got these stupid limitations. The only good thing in this network is that the admins check the files so there are no fakes or viruses that ed2k is full of.
