Along with Vonage, which allows me to talk without limit to my partner in the UK, I am a loyal user of Skype- a VOIP video conferencing software which allows free unlimited calls between Skype users. When I first signed up for Skype, I had a few problems getting my webcam and microphone headset to work properly, but their troubleshooting guides got me on the right track. Since Skype is essentially free for Skype-to-Skype calls, it is difficult to find fault with such a convenience.
There are a few issues though, and bugs that should probably be worked out. One common one is an unrelenting periodic static problem that seems to plague Windows XP
users. Before I upgraded to Vista, I had this issue and it was maddening! Every few minutes, without warning, my audio would go to a very loud and obnoxious static noise and I could not hear anything else. The other caller did not hear the static bursts. I found through some forums that sometimes the static could be stopped by putting the call on hold momentarily, but that was just a temporary fix and the noise came back every time. It was such a relief to be rid of that problem once I switched to Vista. Calls do occasionally get dropped without explanation. Since it is free, I don’t complain much. I just call back.
Sometimes Skype video will freeze or pixelate, and sometimes this issue seems to be worse than others. Usually it will straighten itself out though, and you’ll get to watch the video “speed” to catch up to the audio, which can be pretty funny. The general quality of the video seems to depend on the connection, and also the quality of the webcams being used by the callers. Skype can also be used for calling landline/cell phones for a fee, and SMS messaging. You can load “Skype credit” of $10 or more, and to send a SMS is only about 9 cents per page, which is great for me, considering my cell phone service does not allow international texting. Unfortunately you cannot receive a text using Skype. I think this is a feature they should definitely add, and I would be quite willing to pay to receive texts on Skype. The Skype forums are a bit confusing to navigate, in my opinion. I am interested in getting a cell phone that will run Skype, although I understand it operates a bit differently from the phones. Overall, I am very happy with how it operates even though there are a few issues. It is worth it, to get to see and talk to my partner for as long as I want, any time.
